We are a dedicated group of volunteers, based in Lewes, Delaware, who strive to increase the quality of reading education for the students in our community through the use of trained therapy dogs. The goal of the LEAP program is to improve the literacy skills of children and grow their enthusiasm for reading by using therapy dog teams (dog/owner) as literacy mentors. The presence of a LEAP dog creates an inviting and motivating reading environment. LEAP dogs are nonjudgmental, comfortable, and FUN! Reading sessions take place in local schools, libraries, and other settings.
We use Pet Partner teams: volunteers and their dogs who have been trained and tested for temperament, obedience skills, and health. We offer training several times a year. Information about our training programs can be found here.
The children at the locations where we offer LEAP look forward to our visits and make many happy memories while improving their reading skills – whether they are avid readers or just beginning to learn to read. Visit us at our Libraries!
Liability insurance for our program is provided by our partner, Faithful Friends Animal Society, Wilmington, Delaware. Faithful Friends is a private non-profit animal welfare organization that maintains a no-kill pet shelter.
